Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager

Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager (formerly DCAM) is designed to help users create and manage the relationships among document components. The relationships that Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager (DLM) manages are primarily links: links within a document (intra-document links); links among documents (inter-document links); and references between documents and graphic files (media links).

Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager’s capabilities become especially important in two circumstances:

  • For large collections of documents and a large number of links, Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager provides user interfaces for creating and maintaining links to ensure that those links remain valid
  • For dynamic content, where components that contain links may be combined in virtually limitless combinations, Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager provides intelligent management of links to prevent those links from becoming invalid
Key Benefits

Reduces Publishing Costs
Automates the process of validating links prior to publishing, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming manual processes to maintain link validation

Increases Productivity
Enables authors to easily find and insert links and maintains the validity of those links automatically, significantly reducing the time authors spend on searching for related information

Speeds Time to Market
Supports dynamic publishing by maintaining the validity of links regardless of how components are combined, enabling on demand publishing

Enables Easy Repurposing of Information
Resolves links differently based on the usage or context of the information components that contain the links

Use Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager to insert and manage links within the current document, within any document in the repository, or directly from the Web.

Features

Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager is an optional add-on module to Arbortext Publishing Engine. Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager resolves links for Publishing Engine during publishing. Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager maintains a repository of links within a database (which you must obtain separately from Microsoft or Oracle). It also provides an authoring interface to Arbortext Editor for creating, maintaining and deleting links.

Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager provides both server-based and client-side capabilities in support of authoring, management, publishing and distributing content:

  • Provides a user interface for authors to create, validate, and manage relationships, such as cross references, related items (e.g., “see also”), media, and navigational links
  • Ensures validity of links and component relationships as an author works; for example, it ensures than an author does not delete the target of a link
  • Manages relationships among components in various locations within a single document, in various documents, in dynamically assembled documents, and in subsets of master documents

Provides several important features in the publishing stage:

Repurposing content
To enable a component of content to vary according to its usage, you can use DLM to make links variable, enabling you to link to different targets depending on the context in which the component is used

Inline content vs. linked content
When you publish a document, you can set up DLM to control whether the target of a link should either be included in the document as if it were a component of that document or if there should be a hyperlink or cross-reference to that target

The heart of Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager is a Link Repository, which stores links as well as metadata about each link. The metadata includes information such as the type of link, the component that contains the link, the targets of the link (if any), custom scripting for processing the link, and other information for validating, processing and publishing content.

Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager allows any element or attribute to be a link. DLM supports XLink, the Web standard for linking, as well as proprietary link designs such as “olink” and “ulink” in the DocBook DTD.

Arbortext Dynamic Link Manager works with both XML and SGML, even mixed within the same repository or the same process.
